PEACE in Action is Back!

After a brief hiatus over the holidays, PEACE in Action is back in full force this February.

For those of you who haven't heard, PEACE in Action "is when we go out into the community, and we do random acts of kindness," says project coordinator Danny Guzman.  The third Saturday of every month, a group of volunteers meets at Oak Ridge Baptist and then hits the road to bless a community member in need.

This month's project is for someone who lives just minutes from the church, someone who is especially deserving. 

According to Danny, on Saturday, February 16th, the PEACE in Action team will give back to an upstanding "senior citizen in our community, who has been a cornerstone in our community for so long.  Her name is Nancy MacDonald, Mama Mac.  She was a teacher at Bennett High.  She used to be the lacrosse coach.  And so she spent a lot of time pouring into students, for most of her life, actually.  But a couple years back, she had a major stroke.”

Danny went on to explain that Nancy's stroke left her with multiple limitations.  Since her stroke, she has suffered several falls coming in and out of her front steps.  Enter PEACE in Action.

Danny and Bill von Paris are seeking as many volunteers as possible to bless Nancy MacDonald with a new landing and handicap ramp, "so she doesn't have to be living in solitude inside of her house."

But that's not all.  In addition to making it possible for Nancy to safely get out to the grocery store and her doctor's appointments, Danny and Bill also plan on addressing another dire issue in Nancy's home:  A recent roof leak has compromised Nancy's safety in her kitchen.   

"If the ceiling falls, and it falls on her, it could really, really hurt her," Danny explains.  So on the 16th, the PEACE in action team plans to tear down the damaged ceiling and hang some new drywall.

Danny cautions potential volunteers not to fear, noting that while some may hear "drywall" and immediately get nervous, there are only a few sheets that need to be hung.  "Many hands make for easy work," he reasons, noting that he's hopeful that the team will be large enough to not only finish the job, but to do some painting, as well.

That won't be possible, though, without a great turnout of volunteers.

Not sure you've got the skillset for the job?  “You do not need to have any skill in construction whatsoever," Danny reassures us.  "All you need is a willing heart, willing to come out, serve God, serve our community, love on this lady and just show her that we’re there.  Everybody can get involved.  If you don’t know the carpentry trades, that’s fine, because there are plenty of us that do that are willing to teach you along the way.  So not only do you get to bless somebody, but you get a blessing of learning how to do some things that you might not know how to do.”

Rain or shine, Danny and his crew (and hopefully, you!) will meet at ORBC Saturday, February 16th, at 8:30 a.m.  If the weather is poor, it is possible that the ramp and landing portion of the project will be pushed to a later date.  No matter the weather, though, PEACE in Action is giving Ms. Nancy a new ceiling.

PEACE in Action

Ordinary People. Empowered by God. Doing What Jesus Did. Wherever They Are.  These are the words members of Oak Ridge Baptist Church live by when they engage in the PEACE Plan—our church-wide commitment to Promote reconciliation, Equip servant leaders, Assist the poor, Care for the sick, and Educate the next generation.  More than words, however, the PEACE Plan in Action is about showing the love of Jesus in tangible ways in and beyond our community.
